1 Stunning Day at the Colorado National Monument

If you have a day to spend in Grand Junction, Colorado take the opportunity to visit the Colorado National Monument a US National Park. It is a true treasure of beautiful red rock canyons. You will certainly be amazed by the beauty and the stunning views. In all honesty I had never heard of The Monument before our visit. We decided to stop in Grand Junction to explore as our itinerary only allowed so much time but I am so glad we found this gem.

John Otto fell in love with the canyons in 1906 and at which point he lead the charge to establish the land as a National Park which was achieved on May 24, 1911 when President Taft signed the proclamation to establish the Colorado National Monument.

Things To Do in The Monument

Hike, Bike, or Drive – Rim Rock Drive is a spectacular 23 mile drive through Colorado National Monument and the red rock canyons. The road has some steep and narrow sections so if you have a fear of heights be aware of that there may be some sections to be careful on. The cyclists share the same road which will require some patience and caution as you make your way through the area. If you do not stop, the trip can take approximately 45 minutes to an hour but you will certainly want to stop and view some of the amazing sections of the canyons. The drive is likely to take 2-4 hours with stops along the rim to explore.

Stop at Saddlehorn Visitor Center to learn all about the area and pickup trail maps to begin exploring the area on foot. There are both short and long trail that you can explore with many right along the edge of the canyon. The Visitor Center has an orientation film, souvenir shop, exhibit hall which provides the history of the area, you can even speak with a ranger.
